About 2 months ago I met an unemployed motorcyle mechanic in a marketing
forum online...
Jay had mentioned that he'd lost 40 lbs after using the P90x program and later
joined a marketing program that sold various weight-loss products online.
So he started a WordPress blog centered around weight-loss with p90x but was
tackling SEO issues and struggling with sales from the site in the beginning.
We tossed SEO and backlinking info back and forth to each other for the next couple of weeks. I shared with
him what had worked for me and he mentioned online strategies that I myself had overlooked.
Little by little his blog started getting hits and sales.
That's when I mentioned going "Offline" to him.
"What do you mean by Offline Marketing?" he asked. "What is THAT?"
"It's kind of what you're already doing online with your site -- but taking that knowledge and helping local
brick & mortar business owners get it right with their sites and also showing them other tools."
(Now, like most of us, Jay started out by honing his marketing skills ONLINE.)
So I told him to check out my offline consulting site/blog and see if he was interested.
And he was!
And lo and behold, in a matter of 2 months, Jay now has 3 clients he's done work for, and he's working on
his fourth.
Now, he hasn't made $10,000.00 in ONE month like you tend to hear about... but he's now focused and
sees the light... the possibilities. He's learning as he goes.
Jay uses no-nonsense tried and true marketing tactics like article marketing, SEO, Google Places,
and Facebook Fanpages to make his clients more visible online.
>>> Jay and I spoke a lot about the ultimate GOAL of marketing -- getting prospects to take action by dialing
the phone or firing off an email to the biz owner -- LEAD GENERATION. Everything else is just a means to an
end . <<<
But before we go any further, let's see what Jay did for his first client:
His first one he met through a friend of a friend .... a hair salon owner in Connecticut. Type in Ct Best
hair salon and here's what you'll see:
But he doesn't stop there.... Since people type in variations of keywords, he also use Squidoo lens' to
position her site on page one for "best ct hair salons."
He's not done yet.... he throws in a Facebook FanPage as well...
And, for the final nail in the coffin.... he makes a killer Google Places listing.... (shhh... he outsources a lot.)
Jay is not a fast-talking salesman by any means. And he's not a suit-and-tie kind of guy either. (neither am I) He doesn't even have a business card or "offline consulting" website up...yet. And he's still ironing out pricing issues, niches, etc.
But you don't need all that to get started. There's so many local businesses out there that need your help --
especially in today's economy. And everyone knows someone they could start with - family, friend, associate.
This offline stuff is best learned a spoonful at a time -- not in one day.
Remember, you don't have to be an "expert"... just get started and get good at one thing... then move on to the next
thing.
However, if you're ready for your own website (if you don't have one, or you're not sure what to have on it)
Check this out:

P.S. Let me know which area you'd like to read or learn more about... is it SEO? Article marketing ? Google Places? Lead-generation? All of the above?
